Acadia National Park in October: The 27-Mile Road Trip That Makes You Finally Slow Down
There's a moment on Park Loop Road in October when you have to pull over.
Not because you planned to. Not because your map says to stop. You pull over because you can't drive and look at the same time, and something in your brain refuses to let you miss it.
Red maple. Granite cliffs. The Atlantic Ocean, impossibly blue.
All of it at once. All of it for free, if you're willing to make the drive.
This is Acadia National Park in October.
Why October and Not Summer
Summer in Acadia is beautiful. It's also crowded, expensive, and nothing like what this place was built for.
October is different.
The light changes. The crowds thin. The lobster is at peak season. And the trees do something that no other coastal park in America can match: they turn red against salt air and open ocean.
Peak foliage on Mount Desert Island typically hits between October 10 and October 20. Check the Maine Fall Foliage Tracker at maine.gov before you book. They update it weekly starting in mid-September.
There is no bad week in October. But the third week tends to be the most reliable.
Getting There
You have two airports: Bangor (BGR) and Portland (PWM).
Bangor is about 1 hour 15 minutes from Bar Harbor. Portland is closer to 3 hours. Fly into Bangor for Acadia specifically.
You need a rental car. Full stop. The Island Explorer shuttle stops running most routes after October 12. Without a car, you're stuck.
Book flights and rental cars early. October fills fast.
The 27 Miles: Park Loop Road
This is the backbone of any Acadia trip. 27 miles. One loop. Designed so that every single pullout gives you something worth stopping for.
Drive it slowly. The point is not to finish it. The point is to stop five times and wonder why you don't live here.
Sand Beach. The only sand beach in the park. In October, you'll likely have it almost to yourself. The water is cold. Stick your feet in anyway.
Thunder Hole. A narrow cleft in the granite where the ocean crashes and booms. Come at mid-tide for the full effect.
Otter Cliff. Pink granite dropping straight into the Atlantic. Stand here and try to feel stressed about anything. You won't be able to.
Jordan Pond. A glacial lake so clear it looks fake. Get the popovers at Jordan Pond House. This is not optional.
Cadillac Mountain: Book This Before You Do Anything Else
Cadillac Mountain is the highest point on the eastern seaboard north of Brazil. In October, it requires a vehicle reservation ($6). Reservations sell out weeks in advance.
Book it before you book your flights.
The summit at sunrise is why people drive 8 hours to Maine and say it was worth it. Cadillac Mountain is the first place in the United States to see the sun rise.
That's a $6 reservation.
The Hidden Side of Acadia: Schoodic Peninsula
Most people don't go here. That's exactly why you should.
Schoodic Peninsula is the only mainland section of Acadia National Park, about an hour's drive from Bar Harbor. The crowds disappear. The coastline gets wilder.
Drive the 6-mile one-way loop. Hike the Schoodic Head Trail (1.2 miles). Find a rock, sit on it, and stare at the ocean for as long as you want.
Nobody will rush you.

The Lobster Rule
You are in Maine in October. Lobster is at peak season. This is not negotiable.
Get a lobster roll. Cold, with mayo, on a butter-toasted split-top bun.
Beal's Lobster Pier in Southwest Harbor. Thurston's Lobster Pound in Bernard. Either one. Go at lunch when the lines are shorter.
This is not a recommendation. This is an itinerary requirement.
Practical Info
Park entrance fee: $35 per vehicle, valid for 7 days.
Cadillac Mountain reservation: $6, book weeks in advance at Recreation.gov.
Parking: Arrive at trailheads before 8:30 AM. After that, lots fill fast.
Weekdays are significantly less crowded than weekends.
Weather: Highs in the low 50s to 60s. Lows in the 40s by late October. Layer. Bring a real jacket.
How Many Days
Three days minimum.
One day for Park Loop Road and Cadillac Mountain. One day for Bar Harbor and the quieter trails. One day for Schoodic Peninsula.
Some of the best Acadia moments happen when you pull over somewhere you weren't going to stop.
One Last Thing
You will stand on Cadillac Mountain at sunrise, watching the first light hit the Atlantic, and none of the crowds will matter.
You'll pull over on Park Loop Road because you have to.
You'll eat a lobster roll at a picnic table overlooking the ocean and think: I should do this every year.
That's what October in Acadia does.
27 miles. One loop. Everything you need.
